Levelling up learners
David leads the growth of Code Club and, through it, supports the roll-out of the new Coding & Robotics Curriculum in South Africa. SAPIENT’s projects give learners somewhere to take those first steps in code and then keep going.
Bridging into the classroom
SAPIENT is working with Dominique Cave, a teacher, ICT integrator and local organiser of NASA’s Space Apps Challenge, on curriculum integrations and content we co-create with teachers, so a class or a club can pick up what the Mars Yard does.
What is in the works:
- Grade 5, Term 3 Natural Sciences. Co-curricular, CAPS-aligned classroom lesson plans for the term.
- Club project ideas. Projects to go with those lessons, for Code Clubs and other coding clubs.
- A coding and robotics lesson plan. A lesson that takes learners from first steps in code towards driving a robot, the way the Mars Yard does.
These are being developed, so expect the details to change. If you are a teacher or run a club and would like to help shape them, we would love to hear from you.
How it connects
The Mars Yard is where Code Club skills meet real hardware: block-based coding in the browser, driving a rover on Mars-like terrain. Lesson plans and club projects are the bridge between that, Code Club and the school curriculum.
